TMJ Treatments

Temporomandibular joint disorder, also known as TMJ/TMD, is a pain in the jaw joint and muscles that can be caused by several problems.

TMJ disorders cause pain in the head, neck, face, and ears.

A sufferer may also experience a jaw locked in position or difficult to open, biting problems, and clicking or popping sounds in the jaw when biting.

Symptoms of TMJ Disorders

tmj-treatments-cheltenham Symptoms of TMJ disorders include:

  • Pain or tenderness in the jaws
  • Pain in and around your ear
  • Difficulty while chewing
  • Facial pain
  • Jaw joint locking, making it difficult to open or close your mouth

TMJ disorders can also cause clicking or grating feeling in the jaws when opening your mouth or when chewing.

If there is no pain or restriction of movement associated with the jaw clicking, you probably won’t need TMJ treatment.

Causes of TMJ Disorders

The causes of TMJ disorders are the following:

  • Arthritis
  • Jaw dislocation
  • Injury to the face
  • Improper teeth and jaw alignment
  • Stress
  • Teeth grinding

Treatment for TMJ Disorders

While there is no absolute cure for TMJ disorders, there are different treatments that may significantly reduce your symptoms.

Your Cheltenham dentist may recommend one or more of the following treatments below:

Medication. Manage muscle spasm and pain by applying moist heat or taking medications, like muscle relaxants, aspirin, other over-the-counter pain relievers or anti-inflammatory drugs.

Wear protective appliances. This reduces the adverse effects of teeth clenching and grinding by wearing a protective nightguard or splint.

Relax. Relaxation techniques may help control jaw muscle tension. Your Cheltenham dentist may suggest you seek training or counselling to help eliminate stress.
