Dental Check-ups Moorabbin
Dental check-ups help your dentist determine if you have dental problems, and they help you to keep your mouth healthy.
Patients are recommended to visit their dentist at least twice a year, depending on the health of their teeth and gums.
At your visit to the dentist, you will receive a comprehensive examination of your mouth, neck, and face, professional scaling and cleaning, and a consultation about your dental and overall health.
Dental Check-up Procedures
Since dental check-ups aim to detect any dental illnesses, they need to be very detailed and particular.
Dental check-ups are composed of two parts – the examination and dental cleaning.
In this portion, your dentist will examine your teeth, tongue, gums, and other surrounding structures for cavities, infections, and other issues.
Your dentist will also examine your jaw and neck for bite problems. If needed, you will be advised to undergo a dental X-ray and/or other diagnostic procedures.
After the physical examinations, you will discuss your diet, lifestyle, and oral hygiene practices.
Your dentist will also ask about any previous and current health problems you have and any medications you are taking.
When your assessment is completed, your dentist will discuss its results with you, the effects of your medication, and the proper care of your teeth.
If there’s a need for preventive, restorative, or cosmetic procedures, the various treatment options will be discussed with you.
Your dentist will tell you the pros and cons of each treatment, approximate costs involved, and leave the final decision to you as to what treatment you prefer.
At Captivate Dental, we are more than happy to give you advice but, in the end, it is your mouth, so it is your decision.
On this part of the check-up, you will undergo comprehensive teeth cleaning. Cleaning, or oral prophylaxis, helps remove the plaque build-up from your teeth.
During this procedure, your dentist will use special tools to remove tartar. This procedure is called scaling.
Dental scaling involves the removal of plaque bacteria from the tooth’s surface below the gums. There are two methods of scaling.
If your dentist uses handheld tools, he or she will scrape plaque from the tooth using a metal tool called a dental scaler and curette.
The dentist will put this thin tool beneath the gumline to access plaque your toothbrush can’t reach.
Your dentist may also use an ultrasonic instrument to scale your teeth. This features a vibrating metal tip accompanied by a cool water spray.
The tip breaks tartar as the water washes out the pocket.
Dental scaling is usually followed by a procedure called root planing. Root planing reaches deeper to address the tooth’s root.
This is performed in the same way as scaling. Root planing smooths the surface of the root so the gums can reattach properly.
The last step is a fluoride gel application. Fluoride helps strengthen the teeth and fight bacteria. It also helps manage tooth sensitivity.
Wait for about 30 minutes before eating, drinking, or rinsing to allow the gel to penetrate on the teeth.
Scheduling Your Next Visit
Depending on the need for a follow-up treatment, we recommend you to come back for your next examination and cleaning after six months.
